The founders broke ground on Steamboat Ski Resort in 1957, many thought they were crazy for trying to build a ski area with a little bit of money and very little equipment. But it worked.It was originally called Storm Mountain, the ranchers who became the resort’s founders would often trek up the mountain and ski down. Today, it’s one of the most-visited in the state and is known as the friendliest.

The Vail is the 3rd largest single-mountain ski resort in the U.S. It is Big Sky and Park City are larger. The ski resort opened in 1962 at the base of Vail Pass and the town of Vail was built around it. When the resort opened, six months after construction began, it already had two lifts and a gondola. Vail Resorts also owns Breckenridge, Keystone and Beaver Creek in Colorado. For the last year Vail, along with neighboring Beaver Creek, hosted the FIS World Alpine Ski Championships.
